GFLYC, THE CONCEPTION, ABOUT 1977

The founding fathers of our sailing club conceived her, like any illegitimate child, on a picnic table at Shiloh Marina.

My memory is that James Carson, Bill Yarbough and I had been sailing our big boats, each boat about 22 feet in length, and had ended the day sitting on the top of a picnic table discussing who beat whom, our sexual prowess, and drinking Gallow. After a substantial amount of wine, and numerous true stories, I think that I suggested, "we need to get our wives together." And their response, "wives, wives, we haven't got enough sense to have one, or keep one!" So then we decided on a sailing club.

Our club was not to be fluff and show. We were fixed on strictly nautical things like, "which is port or starboard, and acquiring cold beer in a dry county." Our members still seem to be trying to solve these problems.

Our illegitimate child has grown up and even gained some degree of respectability. However, we still drink wine, tell true stories, and sail without our wives. But, our child is doing well.
