Race Review (Porta-Potty Race, May 2026)
Porta Potty Race, May 2026
By Andy Stringfellow & Grant Pittman
What a great day of sailing on Greers Ferry Lake this past Saturday! We had a fantastic turnout with seven boats out of the slips and some good South winds with a few strong gusts for our 3rd Annual Porta Potty Race. Our coarse was set. Starting line to Point 4, down to the Porta Pottys (past the Narrows). Get close enough to read the sign and then 180 degrees back to Point 4 and across the line.
The Run down to the Mark
The fleet set out at noon, racing closely together as a single group. Carpe Diem jumped out front early but rounded Point Four with Sirocco and Cheers. As Sirocco and Kaos 2 went slightly South for the better wind, Cheers and Carpe Diem battled it out with a straight shot to our floating mark. Thanks to the steady breeze, we made a fast one-hour run down to the porta potty. As we approached the turn, we ran into a local fisherman who looked a bit shocked to see seven sailboats suddenly converging on his spot. Everyone kept a respectable distance, and he seemed just as entertained by the spectacle as we were.
A surprised fisherman wandering why all these sailboats are coming towards him.
A Lively Journey Back
The trip back threw a few challenges our way as the winds got a little feisty. Sirocco and Wreckless got blown around by some heavy gusts, and a few of the larger boats rounded up in the breeze. Despite the choppy conditions, everyone sailed beautifully and returned to the docks safely. The competition was incredibly tight, with only 20 minutes separating the first and last finishers!
The view from Wreckless Adventurer
Line Honors: Kaos 2 crossed the line just slightly ahead of Cheers with Carpe Diem coming across just two minutes back.
Podium Places: After the calculations, Kaos 2 came in third and Carpe Diem secured second after an excellent sail.
Overall Winner: While fourth over the line, Sirocco took the victory on corrected time!
We wrapped up the day at the docks with the presentation of our special, "prestigious" trophies. Thanks to everyone who came out to make it such a memorable day on the water!
